The Nike Cup

Point at the players/staff to find out their names.

The above team is the one that represented S.G.F.C. at the Nike European Finals at Reggio Emilia in Italy. The Nike Cup is a world wide competition for the Under 14 age group. The Competition is 11 a-side 20 minutes each way, although in the regional Finals it was 10 minutes each way. Over 3000 sides from all over europe tried to qualify for the finals. What they dont tell you is generally it is by invitation only, but you should have won a league or cup at the U13 level to get invited. This is what S.G.F.C. did. They qualified by winning the Herts County cup, you could tell even then the talent that they had because they won the final 7-0 !!!

The first step on the road to Italy were the regional finals which were played at London Colney FC. In the group stage we played Harpenden Colts, Wormley Youth and Chorleywood Common of which SGFC came top. SGFC beat Hertsmere in the semifinals and beat St Albans City Youth in the final. The team had qualified for the National Finals.

The National Finals were played at the former training ground of Manchester City FC. There were 3 other teams in the finals, one from Kent, one from Huddersfield and one from Liverpool. The Team from Liverpool had 7 players on the books of Everton F.C. The Competition was in the form of a league with each team playing each other. After 2 games we were top of the League and all we needed to do was win the last ! The team kept us hanging on until 5 minutes to go until they scored. Another one before the end meant we were going to Italy and would represent England. The trophy was presented to us by Phil Babb then of Liverpool.
